Nieman Conference on Narrative Journalism, March 14-16, 2008

Larry will speak on various topics at the Nieman Conference on Narrative Journalism in Boston March 14-16, 2008, produced by the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard. He’ll participate in a panel discussion on editing titled “Behind the ‘Blue Pencil’: Editors talk about the long form” with Vanessa Mobley, Jon Marcus, and Peter Davis. He’ll also teach in the “Craft Round Robin: Small group sessions led by writers and editors” helping participants craft their work.

Book Passage Travel Writers & Photographers Conference

Larry teaches annually at the Book Passage Travel Writers & Photographers Conference in August, and has since 1994. He also teaches an intensive one-day workshop on the personal travel story at different venues, and ongoing advanced writing workshops.

He has spoken at a wide variety of travel shows, book fairs, writers conferences, and private clubs. He speaks often to promote Travelers’ Tales books at bookstores, on the radio, and elsewhere. He is well versed in all topics of travel writing, travel safety, and travel publishing.

The Craft of Storytelling

Larry spoke about the craft of storytelling to the Mount Diablo, CA branch of the California Writers Club, Oct. 14, 2006, and about the art of travel writing to students in the graduate writing program at San Jose State University, CA, Sept. 19.

GeoBriefs: Asia

Larry talked about political and cultural issues and trends that affect travel in the region at the 19th Annual Educational Travel Conference in Washington, DC in February 2005. At the same conference he was on a panel with Sana Butler, special correspondent, Newsweek International; Peter Greenberg, NBC travel editor, Today Show; Veronica Stoddart, travel editor, USA Today; and Nancy Pfeiffer, founder and managing partner, Adventure Travel Media Source. Attendees included representatives of some 150 nonprofit organizations such as staff of travel programs at art, science, and natural history museums, alumni associations, international education departments, zoos, and aquariums, and 30 domestic and foreign government tourist offices.

In February, 2002 Larry taught a workshop, Nonfiction: Travel Writing, at the Geneva Writers Conference in Geneva, Switzerland.

In March, 2002 he spoke on the subject of Travel After September 11 at the retired judges conference of the California Judges Association in Monterey, California.

Twice Larry has been a travel panelist at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books in Los Angeles.
